I don’t know – we never met. So much for a student support structure. But I did not give it much thought – why did I need a lawyer, anyway? 256 DAYS LATER ARRESTED It was as if the world shook when I extended my hand and met only air. I had offered my hand and said hello, just as I had several times when I met the detectives before, except this time I was greeted not with a handshake but two stony faces. One was telling me that I was being arrested for the murder of my friends. It was surreal, like watching the scene as a third person, detached from my body.

Everything familiar was tainted with pools, smears and spatters of blood. Two friends were lying in that blood. It was as if I had been plucked from where I had been standing moments before in the safety of my home, and instantaneously teleported to an unknown, ghoulish place, with my mind reeling and my bearings lost. When I think about what I saw, the images appear in ‘tunnel vision’. I can remember – or more accurately, I cannot forget – parts of what I saw, but the periphery remains featureless.

Soon after returning, I gave away a lot of my money and gave/threw away most of my other things, sometimes to the chagrin of the people who kept them so nicely while I was ‘away’. The only things I kept were my model kits. My priorities have changed; I’m not that hung up on possessions anymore. I did some travelling right after getting out, all by myself – just me versus the world. It was great to be anonymous, walking with a pack on my back for miles between towns – just God, me and our thoughts.
