The dominant connotation – both in Japan and elsewhere – of ‘change’ is in many cases positive, something that should be realized as soon as possible. Here the neutral meaning of the concept is chosen, since not all changes to be undertaken 14 Rien T. Segers in Japan (or elsewhere) are necessarily positive.
